Viscoelastic
Visco - resistant to change of shape, Elastic - able to return to its original shape. Viscoelastic TEMPUR material senses body temperature and weight then conforms to exact body dimensions. Pressure is absorbed and evenly distributed throughout the entire surface. Once the source of pressure is removed, the material "flows" back to its original shape.

The TEMPUR Difference!
The TEMPUR difference is in its ability to envelop the patient. As a result, the patient lies IN the mattress, NOT on top of it. The fluid-like properties of TEMPUR material provide the same advantages as low air loss therapy. The material gently moves with the patient, conforming to the body, thus reducing pressure peaks that shunt blood flow from areas at risk for breakdown, as shown in Figure A.*
The most important benefit of immersion is the equalization of pressure over the entire body area in contact with the surface. This can be seen in the very smooth gradient map shown in Figure B.*

Density of TEMPUR material
Higher density results in greater durability, increased support, and enhanced sensitivity. Features and benefits of “memory” materials are proportionally enhanced as density is increased or decreased. Our extensive research has led us to choose the density of 5.34 lbs/ft3 as the ideal density for a sleep surface.
Open-cell
TEMPUR material is a viscoelastic, “open cell” polyurethane. It is NOT latex. The open cell structure is breathable and promotes air flow. Air, water, and gel systems are all “closed” systems that displace pressure instead of absorbing and relieving it. Air is pushed out of the TEMPUR cells when pressure is applied. When the pressure is removed, the cells automatically “reinflate” to return to their original shape. This breathable structure also promotes the dissipation of heat. |
